INTEL 8086 t0 80286:16 bit Micro Processors.

Introduction:
The Power of a microprocessor depends on many factors.Important among these factor are word size, cost ,physical size, speed ,instruction set and addressable memory range etc.The speed of the microprocessors is defined as the number of instructions executed per second. It is expressed in million instruction per second(MIPS) .The speed of those microprocessors involving floating point instructions, are expressed in million floating point operations performed per second (MFLOP) . A powerful instruction set facilities the programmer /user to write the programs efficiency under different conditions .Apart from speed and powerful instructions set,one of the other factors that decide the capability of the microprocessor is the number of pins.
During 70s the trend was to develop microprocessors with 40 pin package only such Intel's 8085 ,Zilog Z 80 and Digital Equipments(LSI 11) microprocessors. With the passage of time, more number of functions were implemented on the microprocessor chip and hence 8 bit microprocessors 8085,Z-80 , LSI-11 etc. were handicapped with 40 pins, number of instructions and addressable memory to provides such facilities.
As the 40 pin , packages limited either the addressable memory range or dictated to multiplex many functions.Fortunately rapid advancement in semiconductor technology came as rescue to microprocessor designer to provide a platform to overcome these bottleneck in the form of 16 bitters having much higher thrupt, larger memory addressing space ,faster data handling capability, and better instruction set.The obvious option was to break the barrier of 40 pin package.National semiconductor and Zilog came out with 48 pin packages,Motorola prodused 64 pin packages and Intel came out with 68 pin package as the 16 bitters.
Features of the 16 bit processors
1.Increase execution speed.
2.increase addressable memory set.
3.powerful instruction set.
4.Support multiprocessing.
5.Support auxiliary processor for numeric operations.
6.Compatible to high level languages.Labels: Intel Micro-Processors
